I want to share some Labor Day sales because I desperately want to go shopping this weekend but really don’t need any more books and clothes (especially since I want make both). I could probably justify more art supplies but should I? Should I? The multiple blank canvases and notebooks that I have hoarded disagree with me.
I’ve actually been going through my old sketchbooks and posting my unfinished work on Instagram.
This is partly because I hate how so many artists post their sketchbooks full of finished and very well done paintings or imagery that just boggles the mind. I know seeing people’s actual sketches and ideas online (on places like LiveJournal) really helped me understand how much of art is playing with an idea before you make a finished piece.
But also it feels good to share my unfinished art, and have my friends enjoy it. I have always been very fearful of showing people my sketchbooks — to the point that only a few people ever got the privilege even in the real world — but lately I’ve been realizing how silly it is to keep my unfinished ideas to myself.
I’m also sharing this because one of my favorite art suppliers, Beam Paints, mentioned that they’re going to have to raise their prices after Labor Day. Most the watercolors I’ve posted here are made with their paintstones. I especially love their gift sets.
I’ve also experimented with colored pencils:
And oil pastels:
If you want to grab a sketchbook too, I recommend Holbein sketchbooks. Tiny watercolor sketchbooks (like the kind you can get from Moleskine) also work for me because somehow they feel very easy to fill up with nonsense and experiments.
That’s about it! I got a new job recently that I will be writing about eventually but I just wanted to send out this little missive. Hope you are all doing well! And if you disagree with the headline I hope you send me a strongly worded email, just for kicks. (Emails agreeing also welcome.)
